Amazon's new 'Join the chat' feature allows shoppers to ask questions and receive real-time, AI-generated audio responses directly on product pages.
Amazon has introduced a new AI-powered feature that allows shoppers to ask questions about products and receive conversational audio responses in real time. Known as "Join the chat," the tool is designed to provide a more interactive shopping experience by simulating a discussion with a knowledgeable store employee.
The feature utilizes what Amazon describes as "AI-powered shopping experts" to deliver information in a natural, discussion-style format. By pulling insights from product features, customer feedback, and other relevant data, the AI can answer specific queries, such as whether a coffee maker is suitable for beginners or if a sweater is prone to itching based on user reviews.
Amazon emphasizes that the AI is built to maintain a fluid conversation. Rather than providing static, generic answers, the system builds upon previous responses to ensure the information remains relevant and avoids repetition. According to the company, customers can steer the direction of the conversation, allowing them to customize the experience based on their specific needs.
"Join the chat" functions as an extension of "Hear the highlights," an existing feature that provides short audio summaries on millions of product pages within the Amazon Shopping app. While "Hear the highlights" has been in testing since last May and is currently available in the U.S., the new Q&A capability adds a layer of depth to the audio experience.
To access these tools, users can navigate to a product page in the app and tap the "Hear the highlights" button located below the product image. From there, users can listen to a brief overview or select the "Join the chat" icon to submit questions via text or voice. The audio interface is designed to continue playing even as users browse other parts of the app.
This new feature joins a growing suite of AI-driven tools developed by Amazon to assist with the shopping journey. These include Rufus, a generative AI assistant built for product research and comparison; Interests, which tracks and surfaces items aligned with a user's personal preferences; and "Help me decide," a tool that suggests products based on a customer's search, browsing, and shopping history. By implementing these technologies, Amazon aims to save customers time by eliminating the need to manually scroll through lengthy product descriptions or extensive review sections.
