Super Bowl champion quarterback Steve Beuerlein is turning to artificial intelligence to take a proactive approach to his cardiovascular health at age 61. The former NFL signal-caller, who played 14 seasons in the league, has enrolled in Heartflow’s Gamefilm registry to screen for potential heart disease risks.
A Proactive Approach to Heart Health
Beuerlein, who earned a Super Bowl ring as a member of the 1992 Dallas Cowboys, noted that reaching his 60s prompted him to consider his mortality more closely. Motivated by his father’s 30-year battle with cardiovascular disease, Beuerlein sought to understand his own heart health status. He described the Heartflow process as a painless, non-invasive, and efficient experience that provided him with thorough and positive results.
The technology utilizes AI to create a 3D image of the patient's heart, allowing doctors and patients to examine the organ from multiple angles. This visualization helps identify the development of plaque, including both hard and soft plaque, which can be critical indicators of heart health.
The Role of AI in Early Detection
The primary goal of Heartflow’s technology is to shift the paradigm of heart care from reactive to proactive. Beuerlein highlighted that approximately 50% of first-time heart attacks or significant cardiac events occur without prior warning signs or symptoms. By utilizing AI to detect issues early, the technology aims to provide patients with a baseline of their current condition, offering a way to identify risks that might otherwise remain hidden.
Beuerlein praised the clarity provided by the AI-powered results, noting that the ability to sit down with a doctor and view a detailed 3D model of his own heart made the information highly comprehensible. He emphasized that the technology represents a revolutionary step in early-stage heart disease detection.
A Legacy on the Field
Throughout his 14-season NFL career, Beuerlein played for several franchises, including the Los Angeles Raiders, Dallas Cowboys, Arizona Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers, and Denver Broncos. A 1999 Pro Bowl selection with the Panthers, he finished his career with 147 games played, 24,046 passing yards, and 147 touchdowns.
For those interested in the technology, Heartflow provides information through its website and through partnerships with various healthcare centers and physicians. Beuerlein encourages others to research the technology as a means of staying informed about their own cardiovascular well-being.
