Meta has announced a significant expansion of its artificial intelligence capabilities on Facebook, headlined by a new search feature called "AI Mode." The update is part of a broader effort by the company to increase user engagement and modernize how individuals interact with content across its platforms.
Transforming Facebook Search
The centerpiece of this rollout is "AI Mode," which allows users to search Facebook using plain language. Instead of presenting a traditional list of links, the feature uses Meta AI to synthesize answers by pulling information from public posts, including content from Groups and Reels. This approach aims to provide users with direct answers based on real-time discussions occurring across the platform.
This development follows the launch of "Forum," a Reddit-style app that features an "Ask" tab powered by similar technology. While these tools offer a new way to navigate social discussions, they have prompted questions regarding the reliability of AI-generated summaries. Because the system synthesizes content from everyday users rather than vetted sources, there is a potential risk that the output could include outdated or misleading information.
New Creative and Editing Tools
Beyond search, Meta is introducing a suite of AI-powered editing tools designed to enhance content creation. Users can now utilize new features for video montages, including collage cutouts and transition effects. Additionally, the platform is rolling out AI-powered photo presets that allow users to modify their appearance in images.
These editing capabilities extend to profile pictures and Stories. Through the "AI Edit" icon, users can virtually try on different clothes, hairstyles, and accessories. For example, sports fans can select the "Wear It" option to virtually add their favorite team’s jersey to their photos, or use the "Wardrobe" feature to restyle their profile pictures.
A Growing AI Ecosystem
These latest features build upon a series of AI integrations Meta has introduced to Facebook over recent months. In February, the company debuted animated profile pictures capable of adding effects like virtual party hats or waving motions. By March, Meta had integrated an AI feature into Facebook Marketplace to assist sellers by automatically replying to buyer messages.
Earlier this month, the company also launched an AI assistant specifically for creators. This tool provides personalized performance insights, such as optimal posting times and summaries of audience sentiment in comment sections. These rollouts align with Meta’s strategy to make Facebook more functional while diversifying its revenue streams. The company has also introduced global subscription plans starting at $3.99 a month for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, with reports suggesting that additional AI-focused subscription tiers are currently in development.
