Google.org has announced a $10 million funding commitment to the Manufacturing Institute to help prepare the U.S. workforce for a new era of industrial innovation. This initiative aims to equip 40,000 current and future manufacturing employees with essential artificial intelligence skills while expanding apprenticeship opportunities across 15 new regions in the United States.
Specialized AI Training for the Shop Floor
The funding will enable the Manufacturing Institute to develop two distinct courses tailored to the manufacturing sector. The first, titled "AI 101 for Manufacturing," will adapt existing Google AI training to fit the specific needs of the manufacturing environment. The second course, "AI for Advanced Manufacturing Technicians," will be newly developed by the Manufacturing Institute.
In addition to these new courses, the funding will provide current and future manufacturing workers with access to Google’s AI Professional Certificate at no cost. These resources are designed to help workers gain the technical proficiency required to integrate AI into their daily roles, fostering new career opportunities within the industry.
Expanding Education and Apprenticeships
As part of the broader effort, the Manufacturing Institute will launch new Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (FAME USA) chapters in at least 15 new U.S. regions. FAME USA currently operates 46 hubs across the country, focusing on training advanced maintenance technicians and building talent pipelines for manufacturers.
To further support students, Google.org is partnering with the mikeroweWORKS Foundation to provide Work Ethic Scholarships. These scholarships will offer financial assistance to eligible participants as they complete their manufacturing programs.
Building on Workforce Development
This initiative is part of Google.org’s AI Opportunity Fund, which supports workforce development and education organizations to help Americans build critical AI skills. The effort aligns with Google’s ongoing commitment to supporting infrastructure and skilled trades, following a similar collaboration with the electrical training ALLIANCE to train electrical workers nationwide.
Google maintains strong ties to the U.S. manufacturing sector, as its partners employ thousands of Americans who build servers, networking infrastructure, quantum computing chips, and other advanced components. By investing in these training programs, the company aims to ensure a broader set of American workers is prepared for the demands of advanced manufacturing.
