Bluesky Launches Attie: AI-Powered Custom Feed Builder

Key Takeaways

  • Empowers users to curate personalized social media feeds using natural language instead of complex coding.
  • Represents a shift toward user-centric AI that prioritizes individual control over platform-driven data harvesting.
  • Demonstrates the potential for the AT Protocol to support a decentralized ecosystem of independent, interoperable social applications.

Bluesky has unveiled Attie, a new AI-powered application designed to help users build custom algorithms and feeds for the AT Protocol (ATProto). Introduced by former CEO and current chief innovation officer Jay Graber and CTO Paul Frazee at the Atmosphere conference, the app aims to put the power of algorithmic curation directly into the hands of users through natural language commands.

A New Approach to Algorithmic Control

Unlike the main Bluesky social app, Attie is a standalone product that leverages Anthropic’s Claude to act as an agentic assistant. Users sign in using their existing ATProto credentials, allowing the app to understand their preferences and interaction history across the open ecosystem. By simply chatting with the AI, users can curate personalized feeds without needing to write code or understand the technical complexities of feed construction.
According to interim CEO Toni Schneider, the goal is to empower a broader range of people to build on top of the AT Protocol. While the app is currently in a private beta for conference attendees, the long-term vision includes allowing users to "vibe-code" their own social applications and create tools for others.

Putting Users Before Platforms

Jay Graber developed Attie with the philosophy that AI should serve individuals rather than platforms. She noted that major social networks often use AI to harvest data, control algorithms, and maximize time spent in-app, whereas an open protocol allows users to find signal in the noise. By decentralizing this power, Attie enables users to create software that functions according to their own needs.
The development of Attie coincides with a period of growth for the ecosystem, which now supports 43.4 million users. Following a $100 million funding round, the company has secured over three years of financial runway. This stability allows the team to focus on long-term challenges, such as implementing privacy controls and exploring monetization strategies, which may include subscriptions or hosting services.

Building a Decentralized Ecosystem

Schneider, who previously led Automattic, draws parallels between the potential of the AT Protocol and the WordPress ecosystem. He envisions a future where independent, decentralized pieces coexist and work together to form a massive, interconnected network. Despite the involvement of crypto-focused investors, Schneider confirmed that the company has no plans for crypto integration, emphasizing that their focus remains on decentralized social networking.
As the team continues to refine Attie, they remain committed to building people-focused technology. Whether the app will eventually require a fee remains undecided, as the project is still in its early stages of development.
