Gemini Spark, Google’s agentic AI assistant designed to manage various aspects of a user’s digital life, is now available on macOS. The launch allows the assistant to operate within the desktop environment, enabling it to interact with local files and better compete with other desktop AI agents such as Claude Desktop, Microsoft’s Copilot, and OpenClaw.
Expanded App Integration and Functionality
Google has integrated Gemini Spark into the existing Gemini desktop app, bringing significant improvements to its utility. Responding to user feedback, the company has added support for Google Tasks and Google Keep, allowing users to manage short lists and notes more effectively. Previously, the lack of integration with these services was noted as a point of frustration.
Beyond Google’s own ecosystem, Spark now supports several third-party applications, including Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rentals. These integrations allow the assistant to perform a variety of tasks, such as reserving tables, ordering groceries, designing flyers, or booking apartment tours. Additionally, Google is introducing support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which enables users to connect their preferred apps directly to Spark to create a more personalized assistant.
Real-Time Tracking and Workflow Automation
Gemini Spark has gained the ability to track topics and react to events in real time. This enhancement improves the assistant’s performance when monitoring dynamic information, such as sports scores, stock movements, breaking news, social media updates, and weather patterns.
The assistant is also designed to streamline document and file management. Users can leverage Spark to sort and organize files on their computers or use those files as source material for new Google Workspace documents and spreadsheets. For example, the assistant can process invoices stored on a Mac to generate a budgeting worksheet. While not available at the initial launch, Google plans to introduce a feature that will allow users to assign multi-step tasks to Spark via their phones, such as instructing the desktop agent to retrieve specific information from a local file.
Availability
For the time being, the Gemini Spark beta for macOS is restricted to Google AI Ultra subscribers located in the United States. While the assistant currently focuses on local file management and third-party app coordination, Google has indicated that future updates will expand its capabilities to include handling remote tasks.
