South Korea police arrest man over AI image of runaway wolf
South Korean police have arrested a 40-year-old man for creating and distributing an AI-generated image that misled authorities during the search for a wolf that had escaped from a zoo in Daejeon city. The manipulated photograph, which appeared to show the animal trotting through a road intersection, prompted government officials to urgently relocate their search operation, resulting in a significant disruption to the hunt for the two-year-old wolf, named Neukgu.
A Misleading Digital Trail
The incident began on 8 April, hours after Neukgu escaped from the O-World zoo. The AI-generated image circulated online and was taken seriously enough that the Daejeon city government issued an emergency text alert to local residents, warning them of a wolf sighting at the intersection depicted in the photo. Authorities even presented the image during a press briefing regarding the runaway animal.
Police identified the suspect by reviewing security camera footage and records of his AI program usage. When questioned by investigators, the man admitted he created and shared the image "for fun." He is currently being investigated for the crime of disrupting government work by deception, an offense that carries a potential penalty of up to five years in prison or a maximum fine of 10 million Korean won.
The Hunt for Neukgu
The search for Neukgu captured the attention of the nation for nine days, with even South Korean President Lee Jae Myung publicly praying for the wolf’s safe return. Neukgu is a significant animal for the country, as he is part of a program at O-World dedicated to restoring the Korean wolf, a species considered extinct in the wild.
The search concluded successfully when the wolf was captured near an expressway. Following his return, Neukgu became a local sensation, with a bakery creating a pastry featuring his face and the city considering naming him an official local mascot. A video released by the zoo showing the wolf eating in his enclosure garnered over one million views. To ensure his recovery in a calm environment, the zoo has since announced that it will no longer post updates on the animal.
