Ineffable Intelligence, a British AI lab founded by former DeepMind researcher David Silver, has secured $1.1 billion in funding at a $5.1 billion valuation. The startup aims to develop novel AI models that move beyond the limitations of large language models by creating a "superlearner" capable of discovering knowledge and skills without relying on human-generated data.
The Reinforcement Learning Approach
The company’s core technology centers on reinforcement learning, a field in which Silver holds significant expertise. Rather than training systems on human-generated examples, Ineffable Intelligence intends to leverage trial and error to allow its AI to learn through experience. This methodology mirrors Silver’s previous work at DeepMind, where he led the reinforcement learning team for over a decade.
During his tenure at DeepMind, Silver was instrumental in developing AlphaZero, a program that mastered chess and the board game Go by learning purely from experience. By avoiding human strategies or historical game records, the system was able to defeat the world’s top computer programs. Ineffable Intelligence now seeks to apply this same principle to broader knowledge, with the company claiming that if successful, its "law will explain and build all Intelligence."
A High-Profile Funding Round
The fundraising round was led by Sequoia Capital and Lightspeed Venture Partners, with additional participation from Index Ventures, Google, Nvidia, the British Business Bank, and Sovereign AI, the U.K.’s sovereign venture fund for AI. The massive capital injection has propelled the company to "pentacorn" status, a term used for ventures valued at more than $5 billion.
This investment follows a trend of large-scale seed rounds for AI companies founded by prominent researchers. Similar to the recent $1.03 billion raise by AMI Labs, Ineffable Intelligence has attracted significant interest from top-tier investors. While the company’s business model and path to profitability remain unclear, Silver has stated that any money he earns from the venture will be donated to high-impact charities.
London as an Emerging AI Hub
The rise of Ineffable Intelligence highlights a growing momentum for the AI sector in London. This development is attributed in part to the ongoing presence of DeepMind following its 2014 acquisition by Google, which has fostered a robust network of alumni. Several former DeepMind staffers are reportedly set to join the executive team at Ineffable.
The U.K. capital is increasingly becoming a focal point for the industry, with other ventures like Recursive Superintelligence also establishing a presence in the region. Furthermore, the ecosystem continues to attract interest from major tech figures, as evidenced by reports that Jeff Bezos’ AI lab, Project Prometheus, is in talks to secure office space near Google’s AI hub in London.
