Amazon Q Developer

Amazon Q Developer is AWS's conversational assistant for understanding, building and operating AWS applications. The official documentation describes questions about architecture, resources, best practices and support, alongside development assistance in an IDE. This page covers Q Developer, not the separate Amazon Q Business product.

Ask with the right AWS context

In AWS apps and websites, access starts with the necessary permissions on your IAM identity. The documented entry points include the AWS Management Console, documentation and website, and Console Mobile Application.

That makes the assistant relevant when a developer needs an explanation of an AWS service or help investigating an application's setup. State which resource or behavior you are asking about, then check the answer against the resource configuration and the linked documentation. An answer about a recommended architecture does not establish that your account already follows it.

Microsoft Teams and Slack access requires the AmazonQDeveloperAccess managed policy and channel guardrails. Confirm those permissions and the intended channel scope before allowing a team to use account-connected assistance.

Review development suggestions

AWS documents code chat, inline completions, new code generation, security scanning and code improvements such as debugging or language updates. The listed IDE integrations include Visual Studio Code, JetBrains and Visual Studio; Eclipse is identified as Preview.

The IDE setup uses an AWS Builder ID for free sign-in without requiring an AWS account. Free and Pro access are distinct. The overview does not establish the numerical allowances or all plan-specific capabilities, so consult the current tier details before budgeting team use.

Treat generated changes and security findings as review inputs. Inspect the diff, run the project's tests and check deployment permissions before accepting a change. The documentation says Q is built on Amazon Bedrock; that does not make Q Developer the same service as calling a Bedrock model API.

Plan for the announced plugin change

AWS states that support for Amazon Q Developer IDE plugins will end on April 30, 2027. It points users seeking similar IDE capabilities toward Kiro. That notice concerns the IDE plugins; it should not be expanded into a claim that every Q Developer access surface is closing.

For a new IDE deployment, review the migration notice before committing to an extension-dependent workflow. Existing AWS-console assistance and planned IDE adoption need separate evaluations.
