In one lineA native terminal and chat companion for herdr or tmux sessions, with local dictation and optional notifications.

Waycar lets an iPhone or iPad connect to coding agents running on a user’s own Mac or Linux computer. Its official site describes direct SSH sessions with herdr or tmux, keeping the agent’s files, models and configuration on the host machine.

Keep the existing session

The app displays an agent’s terminal and can provide a simpler chat interface for supported agents. Users can send typed instructions or dictate. The publisher says on-device dictation requires iOS 26 or later and converts speech to text on the phone.

The computer still performs the work and must remain on and awake. Waycar is therefore a way to reach an existing working environment, rather than a hosted agent that continues after the computer shuts down.

Understand how access changes

With herdr, opening an agent in Waycar takes over its terminal and disconnects the desk client until it is reattached. With tmux, both devices can watch the same window. That distinction matters if someone expects uninterrupted terminal access at a desk.

The page describes device-generated SSH keys and pinned host fingerprints. Optional notifications are encrypted before leaving the host. It also identifies an exception to the direct-session data path: enabling AI Summaries sends recent screen text to the chosen AI provider.

Requirements and launch limits

The listed requirements include iOS or iPadOS 18 or later, herdr 0.7.5 or tmux 3.2 or later, and Node 20 or later on the host. Android is described as coming soon.

The free tier includes ten Launches in a rolling 30 days, including new or resumed agents and shells. Watching already-running agents does not count. The captured US Pro price is $5 monthly or $40 yearly. Start by testing a connection, the expected terminal handoff and approval prompts before relying on the app away from the host.
