Chrome extension

Grammarly

Checks grammar, clarity and tone as you type in emails, documents and web forms, and helps draft and edit text on most sites.

What it does

Grammarly checks spelling, grammar, clarity and tone while you type in Gmail, Google Docs, LinkedIn and most other text fields in Chrome. It suits students, job seekers and office workers who want cleaner emails, papers and proposals without switching to a separate editor.

Key features

  • Underlines errors and suggests fixes in real time as you type on most websites
  • Rewrites sentences to improve flow and clarity and adjusts word choice for your audience
  • Generates a first draft or an outline from a short instruction
  • Includes a plagiarism check to compare your text against existing sources
  • Explains each suggestion so you can see why a change is recommended

Use cases

  • Proofreading an important work email before sending it from Gmail
  • Tightening a school essay or report written in Google Docs
  • Adjusting the tone of a LinkedIn message for a recruiter or client

Getting started

After installing, sign in to your Grammarly account and start typing in any supported text box; suggestions appear underlined and the Grammarly icon opens extra writing options.

Good to know

The text you write is sent to Grammarly for analysis, so check your organisation's policy before using it on confidential material. Newer assistant features may arrive as opt-in betas in the extension settings.
