Ask what supports an agent's maturity claim
AgentStripes proposes an evidence-graded maturity model for AI agents. It asks whether a specific released version has observable engineering controls and how strongly the available evidence supports those controls.
The framework defines levels from zero to seven stripes, with 40 capabilities across 12 process areas. Each applicable capability receives a rating from zero to three alongside a separate evidence grade from E0 to E5. A severity-weighted score aggregates the resulting credits.
Basic, safety and proof gates can limit the final stripe even when the numerical score is high. Instruments collect evidence, language-model judges interpret it under explicit criteria, and deterministic arithmetic calculates the result. That separation is intended to make both the judgment and its supporting evidence inspectable.
The demonstration has substantial limits
The authors demonstrate the method on 30 public Python agent repositories using static evidence only. This evidence caps every final stripe at two: 26 repositories receive one stripe and four receive two.
The distinction is not established as reliable. Re-judging changed the final stripe for four of 22 repositories when the engine, dossier and panel changed. None of eight panel-only repeats changed, but all eight were already at one stripe.
The paper explicitly describes the demonstration as exploratory and non-confirmatory. Its parameters are expert conventions without outcome-based calibration, and the stripes have not been shown to predict reliability or safety. Topic-level comparisons with standards are not claims of conformance.
Use it to organize evidence before ranking products
Franklin analysis: the useful starting point is a version-specific dossier connecting a claimed control to an observable artifact. Record which conclusions rely on documentation, static inspection or executed tests.
Treating the stripe as a procurement guarantee would exceed the evidence. Repeating the assessment and checking which judgments change can be more informative than displaying a single maturity badge.
