Google has significantly reduced code migration time by using its own AI tools, specifically large language models (LLMs). These bespoke AI tools, designed for specific product areas like Ads and YouTube, automated tasks such as converting 32-bit IDs to 64-bit IDs and migrating testing libraries.
While the AI generated the majority of code changes, human review was still necessary to correct errors. Despite this, Google estimates a 50% reduction in overall migration time, with some projects seeing up to an 89% time saving. The company emphasizes that LLMs should complement traditional methods and that additional tooling is needed to prevent bottlenecks in the human review process.
