Arlington County is leveraging artificial intelligence to assist 911 dispatchers, particularly during the busy Fourth of July holiday. The Arlington County Police Department has been utilizing AI to manage non-emergency calls, freeing up resources and dispatchers to focus on urgent situations.
This initiative aims to improve response times and ensure that residents with real emergencies receive immediate attention. The AI component has been in use since last year, and the county is hoping it will further enhance efficiency during the peak call volume expected over the holiday weekend.
The Emergency Command Center within the police department handles both emergency and non-emergency calls. The AI is specifically designed to assist with the latter, addressing inquiries about topics like fireworks regulations and towing issues. This allows dispatchers to prioritize critical emergencies, ensuring that those in need of immediate assistance receive it promptly.
The implementation of AI has already shown promising results, with a significant decrease in non-emergency call volume and a reduction in average call length. According to officials, non-emergency call volumes decreased by nearly 16,000 in the first quarter of the year compared to the same period in 2024, averaging 5,250 calls per month.
Furthermore, the average call length dropped from 129.3 seconds to 105.2 seconds. These improvements have collectively saved 829 hours that would have been spent on non-emergency calls, which translates to over nine hours per day. The positive impact of AI is evident in the freed-up dispatcher time and the improved efficiency of the 911 center.
County leaders emphasize that the AI assistance allows dispatchers to focus on emergencies, ultimately enhancing the overall responsiveness of the department. While some residents express a preference for human interaction during emergencies, the AI's ability to handle non-urgent inquiries has proven to be a valuable asset in optimizing the 911 system's performance.
