After 18 years of trying to conceive, a couple is expecting their first child, thanks to a novel approach using artificial intelligence. The husband suffered from azoospermia, a condition where no sperm is detectable in semen, leading to unsuccessful IVF attempts. The couple turned to the Columbia University Fertility Center, where they utilized the Sperm Tracking and Recovery (STAR) method, an AI system designed to find hidden sperm.

The STAR method works by analyzing semen samples under a microscope using high-speed cameras and imaging technology. The AI scans the sample, taking millions of images to identify sperm cells. Once identified, the system isolates the sperm, allowing embryologists to recover and use them for fertilization.

In this case, the AI found three sperm, which were used to fertilize the wife's eggs through IVF, resulting in a successful pregnancy. Dr. Zev Williams, director of the Columbia University Fertility Center, and his team developed the STAR method, which has shown remarkable results.

The system can find sperm in samples where skilled technicians have failed after extensive searching. This method offers a less invasive alternative to traditional treatments like surgery to retrieve sperm directly from the testes, which can be painful and have limitations. The use of AI in fertility care is advancing, with more facilities using it to assess egg quality and screen for healthy embryos.

The STAR method represents a significant advancement in treating male infertility, potentially offering hope to couples who previously had limited options. The technology is currently available at Columbia University Fertility Center, and the team plans to publish their work to make it more widely available.
