Arlington County is utilizing artificial intelligence to assist 911 dispatchers in handling non-emergency calls, particularly during the busy Fourth of July holiday. The Arlington County Police Department (ACPD) has been using AI to manage these calls since last year, aiming to free up resources and dispatchers to focus on emergency situations.

The Emergency Command Center handles both emergency and non-emergency calls, with AI providing assistance for inquiries related to fireworks laws, towing complaints, and other non-urgent matters. The implementation of AI has yielded positive results, with a significant reduction in non-emergency call volume.

The county reported a decrease of nearly 16,000 non-emergency calls in the first quarter of the year compared to the same period in 2024, averaging 5,250 calls per month. This reduction allows dispatchers to prioritize emergency calls, ensuring that residents receive timely assistance during critical situations.

Furthermore, the use of AI has contributed to shorter call durations. The average call length has decreased from 129.3 seconds to 105.2 seconds since the introduction of AI. This has resulted in substantial time savings, with approximately 829 hours saved on non-emergency calls, equivalent to over nine hours per day.

The initiative has received mixed reactions from residents, with some appreciating the efficiency of AI for general inquiries, while others prefer human interaction for emergency situations. However, county officials emphasize the benefits of AI in improving response times and optimizing resource allocation, ultimately enhancing the overall effectiveness of the emergency response system.
