In May 2024, Google Labs collaborated with the Brooklyn-based design duo Wade and Leta to explore the integration of generative AI in spatial design. This partnership culminated in the creation of "Reflection Point," an interactive mirrored maze unveiled at Rockefeller Center. The sculpture is designed to engage visitors of all ages and backgrounds, inviting them to explore its intricate design and navigate through its reflective surfaces.

Its prominent graphic shapes and accessible nature aim to provide a unique and immersive art experience. Wade and Leta leveraged Google's generative AI tool, Whisk, throughout the entire design process. They used Whisk to influence and enhance their creative workflow, starting from the initial conceptualization phase through to the physical construction of the sculpture.

The artists found that Whisk allowed them to rapidly test various visual directions and explore unexpected aesthetics, expanding the possibilities for their design. The artists view Whisk not just as a tool, but as a "creative partner" that helped them push their creative boundaries and challenge their traditional design methods.

By integrating AI, they were able to move beyond their typical approach and discover new and innovative ways to approach spatial design. "Reflection Point" serves as a tangible representation of this collaborative effort, showcasing the potential of AI to revolutionize the art and design landscape.

The sculpture will be on display at Center Plaza until July 20.
