Rivian plans to let its vehicles work with AI agents from outside companies, according to CEO RJ Scaringe's comments at TechCrunch Disrupt. The TechCrunch report distinguishes that future direction from the voice assistant Rivian has already rolled out.
Extend the existing assistant
Rivian already routes requests through an in-house agentic framework. The report describes the system deciding whether to use a local model or cloud service and directing requests to the relevant part of the vehicle's software.
The proposed next step is connecting products from frontier AI companies, including Anthropic. Scaringe described the appeal as continuity: a driver could continue an assistant conversation begun on another device rather than starting without its previous context.
That remains an example of the intended experience, rather than a feature the report establishes as available now.
Account for integration work and limits
Rivian did not announce an implementation date. The company pointed TechCrunch toward its planned AI & Autonomy Day in December instead of providing more details.
Scaringe also described coordination with the model providers as part of the work required. A familiar assistant appearing in a vehicle involves more than adding a chat box: context, account access and connections between software systems all need to function together.
Keep conversation separate from driving authority
Scaringe said braking and steering would not be handed to an agent. The examples instead concern convenience functions and extending a user's existing assistant context.
That distinction matters when interpreting claims about agents “coming to cars.” An assistant that helps with a conversation or request is different from software authorized to make safety-critical driving decisions.
For existing Rivian owners, the useful next information is a documented rollout, supported agents and the controls for sharing context. The current report supplies the company's direction and stated boundaries, without confirming those implementation details.
