Meta slashes 8,000 jobs as it pivots towards AI

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has initiated a sweeping corporate reorganization that includes the layoff of approximately 8,000 employees. The staff reductions, which represent roughly 10% of the company’s workforce, were confirmed by company spokesperson Erica Sackin on May 20, 2026, following notifications sent to the affected individuals.

A Strategic Shift Toward Artificial Intelligence

The layoffs are part of a broader effort to accelerate Meta’s pivot toward artificial intelligence. In addition to the job cuts, a source familiar with the situation indicated that 7,000 other employees are being reassigned to teams focused on AI projects. While Meta has declined to specify which departments are expanding or contracting, reports suggest these employees are being moved into four newly created teams dedicated to building AI tools and applications.
Meta’s aggressive move into the AI sector comes as the company seeks to catch up to competitors such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. To support this transition, the company has committed to massive investments, including the construction of multibillion-dollar data centers and the pursuit of top-tier talent. In January, Meta projected that its capital expenditures for the year would be nearly double the amount spent in the previous year.

Navigating a Challenging Corporate Landscape

This reorganization arrives during a difficult period for the tech giant. Meta has been steadily pulling back from its investment in the virtual reality "Metaverse," a project CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously identified as the future of the company upon its 2021 launch.
Beyond its internal restructuring, Meta is facing significant legal hurdles. Earlier in 2026, the company lost pivotal court cases in New Mexico and California regarding claims that its platforms have negatively impacted the mental health of children and young people. The company is also scheduled to appear in court in June to face lawsuits from school districts alleging that social media companies have contributed to a mental health and addiction crisis among students.
Meta’s current workforce reduction reflects a wider trend across the technology sector, where companies are increasingly cutting jobs to fund and prioritize their AI initiatives.
