OpenAI has launched a new suite of personal finance tools for ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the U.S., allowing users to connect their financial accounts directly to the AI platform. By integrating with the financial connection service Plaid, the feature enables users to link accounts from over 12,000 institutions, including major names like Chase, Fidelity, Schwab, Robinhood, American Express, and Capital One.
Once connected, users gain access to a dashboard that provides a comprehensive view of their portfolio performance, spending habits, active subscriptions, and upcoming payment obligations. The tool is designed to answer complex financial queries, such as analyzing recent spending trends or creating long-term financial plans for goals like purchasing a home.
Integration and Accessibility
To access the new functionality, users can select the Finances option in the sidebar or type "@Finances, connect my accounts" within a ChatGPT conversation. The chatbot then guides the user through the secure linking process managed by Plaid. The feature is currently available on both the web and iOS versions of ChatGPT for Pro users. OpenAI has indicated that it plans to gather feedback from this group to refine the product before expanding availability to Plus users.
The development of these tools follows OpenAI’s acquisition of the personal finance startup Hiro in April. While OpenAI noted that the Hiro team’s expertise was instrumental in the launch, it did not specify the extent of their contribution to the final product. Looking ahead, the company plans to integrate support for Intuit, which is expected to enable more advanced analysis, such as calculating the tax implications of stock sales or assessing the likelihood of credit card approval.
Security and Model Capabilities
OpenAI reports that more than 200 million users already utilize ChatGPT for financial questions each month. To support this, the company has deployed its new GPT-5.5 model, which features enhanced reasoning capabilities suited for complex financial context. OpenAI also collaborated with finance experts to establish a benchmark for the model to ensure higher accuracy in personal finance responses.
Privacy controls are built into the interface, allowing users to manage their data directly. Through the Settings menu, users can remove connections to specific accounts, which triggers the removal of synced data from ChatGPT within 30 days. Additionally, users have the ability to view and delete specific financial memories from the Finances page. This move toward specialized financial tools reflects a broader industry trend, as AI companies like Anthropic and Perplexity also develop sector-specific products to address user demand for data-sensitive topics like health and finance.
