Groq, an AI chip startup, is reportedly in discussions to secure a new funding round of $600 million, aiming for a valuation of approximately $6 billion. This potential deal, led by Austin-based firm Disruptive, would represent a significant valuation increase from the $2.8 billion valuation achieved in August 2024, when the company raised $640 million.

The rapid growth in valuation highlights the increasing demand for AI-specific hardware and Groq's competitive positioning in the market. The company's previous funding rounds have totaled around $1 billion, indicating strong investor confidence. The latest round, if finalized, would further solidify Groq's financial standing and enable it to expand its operations and product development.

The new round's investors include BlackRock, Neuberger Berman, Type One Ventures, Cisco, KDDI, and Samsung Catalyst Fund. Groq, founded by Jonathan Ross, a former Google employee involved in the development of the Tensor Processing Unit chip, has been making strides in the AI hardware space.

In May, Groq announced an exclusive partnership with Bell Canada for a large AI infrastructure project. Furthermore, Groq has partnered with Meta to provide AI infrastructure to accelerate Llama 4 inference, demonstrating its commitment to collaborative innovation. The potential $6 billion valuation reflects the high stakes in the AI chip market, where companies are racing to develop faster and more efficient hardware to meet the growing demands of AI applications.

Groq's focus on specialized AI processors and its partnerships with major players like Bell Canada and Meta position it as a notable challenger to industry giants like Nvidia.
