Emdash is an open-source desktop environment for working with coding agents. Its official documentation describes parallel tasks, recurring agent runs, an in-app browser and reusable prompts, skills and MCP servers. It is available for macOS, Windows and Linux.
Create isolated tasks
The task guide says a task starts from a branch, issue or pull request. You choose an agent provider, and Emdash starts that agent in a terminal. A selectable model is available where the provider exposes one; otherwise the agent CLI's default applies.
By default, each task gets a separate Git worktree and branch. This keeps its file changes apart from other tasks until you merge. Emdash also permits working directly on the checked-out branch, with a warning that changes will no longer be isolated.
Worktrees organize edits; they do not establish that commands, credentials or network actions are harmless. Give an agent a bounded goal, inspect the diff and verify the relevant tests before integrating its work.
Carry issue context into the conversation
The issue guide describes creating tasks from connected trackers such as Linear, Jira and GitHub. The linked issue stays attached and can be inserted into the conversation with available details such as its description, status and assignees.
You can review or edit the generated issue context before sending it to the agent. That matters when an issue contains outdated instructions, private customer information or a suggested solution that has not been checked.
Tracker connections use different credentials and scopes. The guide documents limitations for some providers, including which boards or assigned tasks are searched. Confirm the applicable account and accessible project rather than assuming one connection searches the whole organization.
Preview and review the result
Emdash includes a browser for local development servers and public pages, a diff view and GitHub Actions check monitoring. The product page also describes committing, pushing and opening pull requests inside the workspace. Treat those as separate review steps, not automatic evidence that a change is ready to ship.
The platform supports remote agent work over SSH and scheduled runs with history. Define what a recurring task may change and how its results will be reviewed before enabling unattended work.
The publisher calls Emdash free and open source. That does not establish free model inference or infrastructure for every connected agent. Choose the provider and operating budget separately. This article follows the documented workflow without claiming a hands-on installation, executed coding task or verified isolation of an external integration.
