Build a Character for conversation

Character.AI is a platform for creating and chatting with AI Characters. Its current creator guide describes a setup flow covering the Character's name, avatar, voice, greeting and visibility. A creator can give a fictional persona a defined opening and background, then publish it for conversation or keep it private.

The guide offers both web and mobile creation routes. On the web, the process begins from Create; on mobile, it begins from the plus button. The resulting Character can have a tagline, description and optional definition. Those fields describe how the Character should behave, while the greeting establishes the beginning of a new chat.

Set the voice and opening

The avatar can come from an uploaded image or a generated one. For voice, the guide describes suggested voices, a built-in library and creation from a short audio clip. Use material you are authorized to upload; the availability of voice creation is not a blanket license to copy another person's voice.

Creators can write greetings, add alternatives or request generated variations. The guide also describes an AI greeting option for new chats. For a roleplay or story experiment, check whether the opening gives the user enough context to respond. A Character's configured identity and generated responses still need evaluation; this entry did not conduct a conversation test.

Control discovery and shared lore

The quickstart guide distinguishes Public, Unlisted and Private visibility. Public Characters are discoverable for chat, Unlisted Characters require a direct link and Private Characters are for their creator. Choose the audience before sharing material containing personal or unpublished information.

Lorebooks provide a separate way to store world details that become available when relevant keywords appear in a chat. The current guide describes linking one Lorebook to several Characters, with separate publishing and visibility settings. This can support a shared fictional setting without placing every world detail into each Character's definition.

Access limits to check

Lorebooks are in beta, and early access to creating and editing them requires c.ai+. Features and availability may change. The captured guides do not establish current subscription prices, free-chat quotas or age eligibility, so check the current account terms and access requirements before relying on a feature.

Character.AI's documentation supports creative character-building and conversation workflows. It does not establish clinical benefits, factual reliability or a substitute for human relationships. Treat generated responses as part of the fictional experience and review what you choose to publish.
