In one lineCiteTrue verifies academic references against source databases and provides citation search, draft tools, an API, and an MCP server with per-reference credits.

CiteTrue checks academic reference lists against source databases. Its official citation-checker page asks users to paste references and shows results that can identify a missing source or a year mismatch. The service is aimed at students, researchers, and people reviewing manuscripts, with documentation for both interactive use and programmatic verification.

Checking references and reading assessments

CiteTrue accepts reference lists for verification. Its documentation lists numbered or bulleted references, blank-line-separated lists, BibTeX, and prose with author-year citations as supported inputs. The result can include a matched paper, notices, and confidence information.

The API documentation distinguishes authentic, unsure, inauthentic, invalid, error, and exceeded assessments. An authentic result means the paper exists and is the cited paper. It can still carry notices, such as a year or author mismatch. An unsure result means the service found something but could not confirm it, while exceeded means credits ran out before that reference could be checked. These states give a reviewer more detail than a single pass-or-fail label.

Related writing and source-finding tools

The homepage lists a Citation Finder that accepts a paragraph and suggests peer-reviewed sources for its claims. Paper Draft accepts a topic and produces a section draft with sentences tied to sources. An AI Humanizer rewrites drafts into more natural prose.

Those functions are separate from verifying an existing bibliography. The user-guide index includes guidance on results and suggested citation replacements for references that cannot be verified. It also advertises a free starting option without a credit card.

API, MCP, and credit use

The API verifies text through a streamed response and supports resuming an existing task. Most references cost one credit, while difficult references can cost up to five. Cached tasks with the same text and user do not bill again unless a fresh check is forced. References already in progress can finish after the balance is exhausted, and the resulting overage is deducted at the next reset.

The MCP server provides verification and credit-balance tools for compatible assistants. It uses the same verification API and credit rules. Checking the balance is free, while verification is charged per reference. An API key is required for those integrations.
