Chrome extension

Wavenet for Chrome

Reads highlighted text aloud with Google Cloud neural voices, using your own API key, with control over voice, pitch and speed.

What it does

Wavenet for Chrome reads highlighted text aloud using Google Cloud's text-to-speech voices. It is aimed at people who want natural-sounding narration of web content and are comfortable setting up their own Google Cloud API key.

Key features

  • Supports Google's WaveNet, Neural2, News and Studio voices and languages
  • Lets you adjust pitch and speaking speed
  • Downloads selected text as an MP3 file and supports SSML
  • Adds keyboard shortcuts to read aloud and to download selected text
  • Splits long selections into sentences to work around character limits

Use cases

  • Listening to a long article instead of reading it
  • Saving narration of a text as an audio file
  • Proofreading your own writing by ear

Getting started

Create a Google Cloud API key and add it to the extension, then highlight text and press Ctrl+Shift+S (Cmd+Shift+S on Mac) to hear it.

Good to know

You need your own Google Cloud API key, and usage counts against that account. Selected text is sent to Google Cloud to generate audio.
