FLOPs

Also called floating-point operations

What does “FLOPs” mean?

FLOPs: Counting floating-point operations, meaning arithmetic on decimal numbers, is a standard way to measure computing work. Total FLOPs describes how much computation a training run used. FLOPS with a capital S usually means operations per second, a measure of a chip's speed.

What is an example of “FLOPs”?

Researchers compare models by their training compute in FLOPs, and some AI regulations use compute thresholds to decide which models face extra rules.
