Roblox has announced the launch of Build, a new suite of AI-powered tools designed to lower the barrier to entry for game creation. By integrating these capabilities directly into the Roblox app, the company aims to empower users to develop their own games and experiences using natural language prompts, regardless of their technical expertise.
Democratizing Game Development
Roblox, which currently serves 132 million daily active users, is looking to expand its creator base by removing the technical hurdles typically associated with game design. Through the new mobile-first Build tab within Roblox Studio, users can generate environments, characters, gameplay mechanics, and soundscapes simply by describing their ideas. These AI tools are powered by a broad set of models, including Roblox’s own proprietary technology, which has been trained on extensive 3D modeling and gaming data to produce functional, playable content.
According to Roblox founder and CEO David Baszucki, the initiative is driven by a desire to remove limits on what gaming can be. By allowing creators to build directly from their phones, the company hopes to unlock new ideas from users who previously lacked the technical skills to bring their visions to life.
Testing and Implementation
The rollout of Build begins with a test phase on July 28. During this initial period, the ability to publish games will be limited to select users, with creators in New Zealand serving as the first group to test the publishing workflow. Roblox plans to expand access to more creators and regions in the coming months.
To support this transition, the company is also introducing AI agents capable of bug testing, explaining game analytics, and assisting with engagement and monetization strategies. While a free base tier will be available, Roblox intends to introduce paid options for power users in the future.
Safety and Quality Standards
As Roblox introduces these generative tools, it is also implementing safeguards to maintain platform standards. Build will be available to age-checked users 9 and older, while published games will be subject to safety checks and available to age-checked users 16 and older. Games intended for the Roblox Kids or Select catalogs will undergo an extended review process.
To address concerns regarding the influx of AI-generated content, Roblox stated that its discovery systems are designed to filter out low-quality experiences. The company emphasized that the visibility of games on the platform remains tied to player engagement, noting that if a game does not attract players, it will not be easily discoverable on the homepage.
