OpenAI has officially entered the hardware market with the launch of Micro, a specialized keypad designed to pair with ChatGPT. Developed in collaboration with specialty keyboard designer Work Louder, the device is an artisanal accessory aimed at tech enthusiasts and coders. While it offers a unique interface for interacting with AI, the product has arrived amidst a backdrop of corporate tension, including a trade theft lawsuit filed by Apple against the AI lab.
Design and Functionality
The Micro is a sturdy, compact device that features a clean, white aesthetic. Its layout includes six frosted "agent" keys at the top, which can be customized to execute specific tasks within ChatGPT or the agentic coding tool Codex. Below these are six command keys used to control the programs. Users can connect the keypad to their computer via Bluetooth or a USB cable.
A standout feature is the dedicated button for voice dictation. By holding the button and speaking, users can issue commands to the app, then press a "send" button to submit the request. Customization is handled directly through a Micro tab within ChatGPT, allowing users to adjust key brightness and assign specific projects to individual buttons.

Operating the Micro requires a degree of memorization. The buttons are color-coded to indicate status: white for idle, blue for thinking, green for task completion, and red for errors. Users must also learn which specific projects are mapped to each key.
