Repository work with Claude Code

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent for work inside a software project. It can read a codebase, edit files and run commands. The official overview describes tasks such as implementing features, tracing bugs, writing tests and preparing pull requests. A developer supplies the goal and inspects the resulting changes before treating them as finished work.

The product suits a task with repository context: an error to investigate, an untested module, a refactor that touches several files or unfamiliar code to explain. Its documentation also describes Git operations and development automation. Those capabilities require care with the repository and tools the session can access; a prepared change still needs the project's normal review.

Choose a surface and provide context

The terminal CLI works from a project directory. Claude Code also has VS Code and JetBrains integrations, a desktop app and a browser workflow. The overview distinguishes their setup: the JetBrains plugin requires a separate CLI installation, while the desktop app includes Claude Code. Choose the interface that fits where you will inspect changes and run the project.

Project instructions can live in CLAUDE.md. The overview also describes auto memory, reusable skills and hooks for repeatable tasks. MCP connections can bring external data and tools into a session. A team should define the coding conventions and permitted connections before assigning work involving company documents or production systems.

Review work across longer tasks

Claude Code's documented workflow can include planning, changes across multiple files and running tests. Its editor integrations provide diff viewing, and the desktop surface supports multiple sessions. The overview describes parallel agents and several scheduling routes, including cloud routines and desktop tasks that run on the local machine.

Keep the task specific enough to judge the result. For a bug fix, identify the failing behavior and expected outcome; for a migration, state compatibility requirements. Inspect the diff and test results rather than assuming that a successful agent response proves the application works. This is workflow guidance, not a report from a coding session performed for this entry.

Access and execution settings

Most surfaces require a Claude subscription or Console account, with third-party provider options documented for the terminal and some editor integrations. The product page states that usage limits apply, and Console access consumes API tokens. Plan access does not imply unlimited coding sessions.

Check the current overview and setup guidance for the chosen surface. The marketing page announces auto mode on several paid plans while its FAQ uses broader permission language, so review the actual execution settings before giving a session access to sensitive files or commands.
