Hermes Agent
Hermes Agent is an MIT-licensed assistant from Nous Research. Its repository describes persistent memory, conversation search and skills that the agent creates or improves through use. You can interact through a terminal interface or messaging gateway, with model choice separate from the agent runtime.
Configure the model and enabled tools
The project supports Nous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI and other providers or endpoints. The model command changes that choice without rewriting the application. Provider support does not mean free inference or ownership by those providers; check the billing and data handling of the route you select.
Hermes also has a tool configuration interface. The repository describes terminal execution, MCP integrations and other tools, with local, Docker, SSH and several remote sandbox backends. Choose an environment appropriate to the task rather than giving every conversation access to your main workstation.
The package-management documentation explicitly warns that its dependency manager is not a sandbox for plugin code. Installing a plugin requires trust in both that plugin and its dependencies. Restrict tool access and use harmless test files before authorizing changes to important records.
Review what the agent remembers and schedules
Hermes describes agent-curated memory, periodic persistence prompts and search over past sessions. It can create reusable skills after complex tasks. These features can reduce repeated setup, but saved instructions and remembered facts still need inspection. A reusable skill can preserve an incorrect assumption as well as a useful procedure.
Built-in scheduling can run unattended work and deliver results to a messaging platform. Verify the task's scope, credentials and output destination before enabling a schedule. A sent report does not by itself establish that every external action succeeded.
The messaging gateway supports channels including Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp and Signal. Configure authorized users and permissions before connecting an account. A remote channel makes the agent reachable away from your laptop, but the execution environment and gateway still need to be running.
Use the supported installation and update path
The repository provides Linux, macOS, WSL2 and native Windows installation instructions. Android Termux uses a separate package path. Follow the instructions for the actual platform instead of transferring a desktop install recipe to another environment.
Hermes' package manager manages pinned tools and Python dependencies; it is distinct from the application updater. Its doctor command checks installed tool identities and digests. The documentation advises against modifying the managed Python environment with raw pip or uv commands.
Open-source access does not remove hosting or model costs. The repository's low-cost VPS examples are deployment suggestions, not a guarantee that a particular workload fits that price. Begin with a bounded task, inspect memory and tool actions, and measure costs before leaving scheduled agents unattended.
