accent sherlock
Accent Sherlock is a free accent-guessing page made by Mimica. You record a short reading, then receive a suggested accent and a location on a map. The experience is presented as an interactive guess, with a way to tell the system whether it got the result right.
Read the same passage
The Accent Sherlock page asks you to tap the microphone and read a fixed English passage. Its sample concerns everyday activities such as making coffee and greeting friends. Everyone reading the same words gives the system comparable speech material; the publisher says that is the reason for using a shared passage.
The interface describes analyzing vowels before displaying its guess. That describes the interaction shown on the page, not a published measurement of its accuracy. Record only if you are comfortable supplying the requested voice sample, and do not assume a confident-looking answer establishes where you were born or how you identify.
Treat the location as a guess
After showing a result, the page asks whether it was correct and offers positive or negative feedback buttons. It also invites you to submit where you are actually from. Those controls acknowledge that a prediction may miss the speaker's background.
An accent can reflect more than one place or language experience, so use the result as a conversation or practice prompt rather than a personal classification. It should not be used to verify nationality, decide someone's eligibility for a job or make another consequential judgment about them.
Check the recording notice first
The page states that your voice clip is stored to help improve its open research model. It also says the recording will not be used to identify you and that recording signifies agreement. The stated purpose is the publisher's policy claim, not an independent privacy audit. The notice does not specify a storage duration.
Read that notice before granting microphone access. Use your own voice; do not upload or record someone else without their permission. If you are uncomfortable with retaining a voice sample for research, do not start the recording.
The result screen promotes Mimica for pronunciation practice and provides an Android download link. That follow-on app is a separate step: review its current features, charges and privacy terms before moving from the free guessing page to a practice account.
